South West

Welcome to the South West regional page of the Scottish Land & Estates website.

The South West region encompasses the area south of the River Clyde down to Dumfries and Galloway, covering Glasgow, North Ayrshire, East Ayrshire, East Renfrewshire, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire and Dumfries and Galloway. The South West region represents members of various interests and needs, which reflects the diverse range of rural businesses and activities our membership is engaged in. Our members are unique and provide economic, social and environmental benefit to the countryside.

Regional Hubs

In recognition of the particular needs of members in the South West, two regional hubs have been created in order to direct activity in the region, one for Dumfries and Galloway and one for Clydeside. The purpose of the hubs is not to be as formal as a committee but to get good mix of members together to feed into the regional work plan and help Scottish Land and Estates deliver its service to its members here in the South West.

As with the other regions, the hubs will meet quarterly with one meeting being a joint meeting of the two hubs. One of the hub chairs will take on the role of South West Regional Chair with the other becoming South West Regional Vice-Chair. To ensure consistency, an overarching South West regional workplan will be developed but it will identify actions for each hub to reflect specific work in each hub area. If you have any questions at all about the new South West structure, please don’t hesitate to contact Tracey and Liza.

OSouth Westn Wednesday 13th November 2019, 40 SLE members attended the South West regional reception at the beautiful Dumfries House.

The full programme included an update on regional activity from South West Regional Chairman, Simon Craufurd and upcoming events. Sarah-Jane Laing provided an update on the South Regional Structure that will see two regional hubs being created, one for Dumfries and Galloway and the other for the Clyde. Each hub will have it’s own part time Regional Support Officer to develop the regional workplan and deliver activity. A detailed description of the proposed regional structure will be circulated to members shortly.

David McKie Partner at Levy & McRae Solicitors LLP provided an interesting and topical presentation on ‘Sporting estates, the media and the law’ before we heard from our 2019 Helping it Happen Education award winner, Dumfries House and their Education Programme. It was a brilliant opportunity to hear in greater detail the extensive educational work that has taken place through the Prince’s Foundation at the Estate and the many positive benefits this is having on young people.

During the second half of the afternoon we heard from SLE’s Chairman, David Johnstone who provided an organisational update explaining SLE’s latest political and policy priorities. SLE’s Eleanor Kay followed on explaining SLE’s #Route 2050 publication, outlining the organisations land management priorities and ambitions.

The event concluded with an SLE panel discussion on the risks and opportunities facing our sector and how the organisation has positioned itself to ensure it is best placed to influence key decision makers and drive positive change.

We would like to thank Levy & McRae for sponsoring the regional reception and continued support.
